About Archbishop Tenison's School

School Profile

founded over 300 years ago by Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury, the School has continued to provide a high quality education for boys aged 11 - 19, with girls admitted in the Sixth Form. As a centre for learning, academic success takes place within a stimulating and happy environment, which encourages full development of abilities, personality and talents.

Teaching & Learning

High attainment, self-confidence and co-operation are cultivated here. We believe that everyone has something special to contribute and, as a Church of England School, we are as interested in the moral and spiritual well-being of our pupils as in their academic achievements. Worship and prayer are at the heart of our community and our full time Chaplain supports and encourages boys to explore Christian ideals so that they are fully prepared for life in an advancing technological, multifaith and multicultural society.

Archbishop Tenison's School is committed to excellence.
Our curriculum is designed to offer a broad range of subjects, to encourage independent learning and to provide a wealth of opportunities for pupils to experience outside school. We expect the highest standards of work, dress, behaviour, attendance and punctuality. Working in partnership with parents, we provide a firm framework within which all pupils have the chance to excel and achieve.

Central to our philosophy is the belief that academic success is essential to each pupil's future. Everyone is expected to work hard and do their best at all times.

Dedicated, dynamic and highly qualified teaching staff deliver a broad and balanced curriculum, which ensures that each pupil has the opportunity to achieve success from the very first day. Pupils are placed according to their ability into one of four form groups to allow them to make maximum progress.

Years 7, 8

Courses are interesting and challenging and pupils are given every opportunity to develop their own particular academic strengths and talents within the core subjects of the National Curriculum.

Years 9, 10 & 11

Starting GCSE Courses early has an exciting and stimulating effect on student learning. In addition to the core subjects required by the National Curriculum, pupils have the advantage of a wide range of GCSE options so that they can choose as many subjects as possible that interest them. Pupils can take up to 10 GCSE qualifications and are carefully monitored throughout their courses as they follow a balanced programme of study. Key Stage 4 Option choices are always the result of careful consideration and discussion by Parents, pupils and staff.

Sixth Form

Tenison's Sixth Form provides an excellent opportunity for post-16 study and I hope that this prospectus highlights the range of courses and experiences available to you. The time you spend with us provides the first steps towards helping you achieve your personal goals and ultimately fulfilling life-long ambitions.

We benefit from a collaborative pooling of our skills expertise and resources with The London Nautical School and Charles Edward Brooke School. All three partnership schools have been awarded specialist status: Archbishop Tenison's - Visual Arts; Charles Edward Brooke - Media and Music, and London Nautical - Sport. This enables us to offer cutting edge teaching and learning in state-of-the-art facilities.

We offer you new and exciting opportunities to expand your horizons, through our enrichment programme which takes full advantage of being in the City that, in many fields, leads the world. The experiences you gain in the Sixth Form will help you to become a well-rounded young person prepared for future challenges and opportunities.

Our Personal Tutor System will ensure that you are always treated as an individual and receive the right support and guidance to help you grow and succeed during your time with us. OFSTED grades the Sixth Form as "outstanding" with regard to personal development and wellbeing, and support and guidance as "good".

We are a Christian community which embraces students of all faiths and none. We are a strong Sixth Form community because our collective vision is seeking to bring out the best in all our young adults. Our motto: 'Justice, Mercy and Humility', is central to all that we do, and we believe it will equip you as young adults to make a positive contribution to society.
